Introduction:
I was hired by Michelle Mayther, owner of Minty Made, a Seattle-based sustainable design agency at that time to build a website for her online course, the GMA. She wanted her website built on WordPress following sustainable web design best practices.
Goals:
- Build a brand new website with Elementor based on Michelle’s design mockup and web copies. There were 6 pages: Home, Courses, Training, Events, Blog, and About.
- Adopt sustainable web design practices including media and performance optimization.
Main tools & plugins:
Elementor Pro, The Event Calendar, W3 Total Cache, Smush
Execution, issues encountered, & solutions
- Set up the website – installed WordPress, added all the tools, and set up the development environment.
- Uploaded the site’s assets – e.g. fonts, color schemes, brand logos, image files, etc.
- Built the global elements such as top navigation, footer, email sign-up form, etc.
- Built the web pages from the top section to the bottom, and edited the responsive design.
- Refined the pages based on Michelle’s feedback.
- Edited and tested the functions – including the sign-up form, contact form, event list, and blog.
- Optimized all the media by resizing, compressing, and lazy-loading them.
- Optimized the site speed by using W3 Total Cache to cache the static pages.
- Tested the entire website.
- Launched the website.
Results:
- The GMA website looked as beautiful and well-organized as the design mockup.
- The website was built with sustainability practices throughout the processes from media optimization to speed optimization.
Testimonial:
“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Gift on several website projects. Not only were the websites she created developed and optimized efficiently, she was able to do a great job of matching the developed site to the mockups I had designed. Communication with Gift was always timely and professional and she also clearly set expectations throughout the entire project, which I very much appreciated. If you are looking for someone who is skilled, efficient and is well-versed in sustainable web design practices, I highly recommend hiring Gift. You will not be disappointed!”
